His stage name in vaudeville was Elman, shortened from Kopelman when his billing as "The World's Youngest and Fastest Hypnotist" did not fit on marquees or promotional material. Career and later life Įlman's performing eventually led to the vaudeville circuit, and he moved to New York in 1922. He was a talented musician on the saxophone and violin, and used his quick wit and love of entertaining to perform within the community as a comic. In his early teens, Elman worked odd jobs to help the family. Jacob died in November 1908, leaving his pregnant wife with six children. When a family friend relieved the intractable pain quite rapidly with hypnosis, Elman set about learning these techniques from him and began to realize the vast possibilities of hypnosis in the relief of pain outside of traditional medical procedures. Soon thereafter, Jacob was diagnosed with cancer. Lena also began a hairdressing shop next door. In the basement, they provided mikvah services so Jewish women in the community could purify themselves through special cleansing. In 1906, they moved their wig-making business to the Kopelman Building, which they had built at 514 1st Street. In 1902, the family moved to Fargo, where they started a business on Front Street making wigs, switches, and related performance equipment. She was Grandmother to Christopher (Jasmine) Koering, Tacoma, Washington Carter (Rachel) Erickson, Park Rapids, MN Daniel (Adrienne) Hutchison, Colorado Springs, CO Nathan (Beth) Olsen, Arvada, CO Amy (Jeremy) Frazer, Geneva, IL and Josh Olsen, Denver, CO. She was inducted into the Hillsboro Public School Hall of Fame in 2008.īeulah was mother to six children: Gary, Sondra, Barrie, Lonny, William, and Kathy. She was a lifelong member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Hillsboro where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, taught Sunday School, and was active in Ladies Aid. She was a pioneer in the field of special education in the Traill County area. During those years she received a scholarship from Mayville State and the University of North Dakota where she studied advanced strategies to use while serving special needs children.

After some time away from education, and, beginning in 1958, she taught special needs children in a one-room setting in Hillsboro, serving students from Hillsboro, Mayville, Portland, Hunter, Buxton, and Hatton. She married Herman Koering in 1940, and they raised six children.

That part of her career took her to a one-room school in rural Mayville, and two years later to Caledonia, ND where she taught grades 7-8. She graduated from Esmond High School and then attended Mayville State Teachers College where she graduated with a two-year degree allowing her to teach in grades 1-8. Beulah was born November 28, 1915, to Asle and Ida (Erickson) Gunderson in Esmond, ND. Beulah Genevieve Adeline (Gunderson) Koering, 102, Hillsboro, ND, died September 16, 2018, at Sanford Hillsboro.
